Joining Squares
With two squares side by side, right side up, attach along one side of each square using yarn needle. Beginning at corners, insert needle in between top of sc chains, grabbing only one strand from each chain. Tie off yarn.
Join squares for total of 3 sets of two squares. One square will be remaining.
Joining sets of squares:
Using same technique for joining squares as above, join sets as shown. Join the single square to the 3rd set as shown in photo.
Turn work right side up with 4 points of squares at top. Fold left, top square to lay on top of first center square. Fold right, top square to lay on top of second center square. Using yarn needle and 5” strand of yarn, attach left and right squares at center corners only. Tie off yarn.
Shoulder straps:
Working with right side out, join yarn to front shoulder corner point of granny square. Ch1, sc in corner, then continue with a chain 5.5” long (6.5” for med; 7” for large; adjust length as needed). With chain on hook, insert hook into back shoulder corner point of granny square with a slip stitch, ch1, sc in same corner stitch.. Slip stitch into each chain working back towards the front shoulder. Tie off. Repeat for second shoulder.
Fringe:
Cut yarn into 24” lengths (or shorter if preferred). Holding 3 strands together (or 2 strands if preferred), fold in half. Insert hook into any space between sc border of vest, grab corner of folded strands with hook, pull through space about 2”, pull remaining strands through loop, pull long strands to lightly tighten knot. Repeat, adding fringe to every other sc space (or every 3rd space if preferred).
