Crazy Chic Waistcoat Basket
Ch 35
Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in ea ch across. Turn. 34 hdc
Row 2: Ch 2, hdc in ea hdc across, hdc in last ch. Turn. 34 hdc
Repeat Row 2 for 6 total rows. Do NOT turn work.
12 Hdc around short side, 34 hdc along bottom, 12 hdc across next short side. Do not work the last long side. Sl st in ch. Ch1.
Working in 3rd loop of hdc’s (seen on back of work; see photo above), sc around entire piece. Be sure to complete the sc with yarn in front of hook. This will help form the ‘hearts’ that resemble knitting. This row will cause the basket to ‘stand up’. Slip st into ch. Ch 1. You will work 12 sc’s along short sides and 34 sc’s along the two long sides.
Working with center single crochet (see photo above), 34 csc along first long side, 12 csc along the short side, 34 csc along the long side, 12 csc along short side. It is crucial that the hook is inserted INTO the center of each sc, not into space next to sc’s. See where needle is pointing in photo above. Slip st into ch. Ch 1.
Repeat from * to * until basket measures 5” high or 12 rows.
Row 13 Handle row: Work 13 csc, ch 9, sk 8, 38 csc, ch 9, sk 8, 25 csc. Ch 1.
Working with reverse single crochet, rsc in ea csc space (not in center of ‘heart’), continue with rsc around handle (as many times as needed to cover chain), continue with rsc around to next handle and repeat to end of row. Tie off.
Finished your basket and donated it to a silent auction. Wanted to post a pic. Don’t see how.
Hi Patty,
I am SO happy to hear you crocheted this basket and were able to donate it. I would LOVE to see a picture of it. Maybe just copy the url of the photo and attach the link to the comment section? Or email me the photo and I’ll see if I can add it. admin@crazycoolcrochet.com
In any case…I appreciate you letting me know you used my pattern successfully.

Can you tell me how many rows are supposed to be on the base? You have “repeat row 2 for 6 total rows” but the picture shows you in the middle of what looks like 11 rows. Since there are supposed to be 12 hdc along each side, does that mean there are 12 rows (so 1 hdc in each row)?
Hi Kimberly,
Thank you for trying out this pattern!
There really are only 6 total rows for the base. It uses super bulky yarn and you insert the hook under the two strand chain, not in the spaces between the hdc’s below. It’s kind of an optical illusion as you look at the photo.
And the 12 hdc’s along the sides are evenly spaced over those 6 rows.
Hope this helps!
