Materials:
Yarn used:

#6 super bulky; Lion Brand Hometown USA

Chicago Charcoal (1.5 skeins of 5 oz skeins)
Springfield Silver ( 2 oz of 4 oz skein)
New York White (4 oz of 5oz skein)

Crochet hook size L/8mm
Yarn needle

Magnifying (reading) glasses (really helps to see the tiny csc stitches!)

Gauge: 3 center sc = 1.25”, 3 rows csc = 1”
Dimensions:
5.5 inches high
16 inches long
6 inches wide

sl st = slip stitch
Hdc = half double crochet
Sc = single crochet
Ch = chain
Csc = center single crochet
Rvs sc = reverse single crochet (also known as the crab stitch)

NOTE 1: Some of the photos used here are from an identical pattern (seen here) using a single silver color. The stitches show up better with the lighter color.

NOTE 2: If you are new to the center single crochet and reverse single crochet stitches, I strongly encourage you to view the accompanying YouTube video above.

BOTTOM

With darkest color (Chicago Charcoal) Ch 35
Row 1: hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in ea ch across. 34 hdc. Ch 2. Turn

Row 2: hdc in 1st hdc (inserting hook under the two strand chain that forms at the top of the hdc below); hdc in ea hdc across. 34 hdc. Ch 2. Turn

Repeat Row 2 for 6 total rows. Do NOT turn work.

Work 12 hdc along the short side evenly spaced, 34 hdc along long side, 12 hdc across next short side. Sl st in ch. Do not work the last long side. Ch1.

Continuing in darkest color, working in 3rd loop of top of hdc’s (seen on back of work behind the top, two-strand chains); see photo above, sc in ea st around entire piece: 12 sc along short sides and 34 sc’s along long sides. Be sure to complete the sc with yarn in front of hook as shown in photo. This will help form the ‘hearts’ that resemble knitting. This row will cause the basket “walls” to ‘stand up’. Slip st into beginning ch. Ch 1.

center single crochet

Continuing with darkest color, working with center single crochets (see photo above), *work 34 csc along long side, 12 csc along short side, 34 csc along long side, 12 csc along short side. It is crucial that the hook is inserted INTO the center of each sc, not into space next to sc’s. See where needle is pointing in photo above.

NOTE: I would highly recommend purchasing the reading glasses below, especially for this basket project. It can be a bit difficult to see the center single crochet stitches. I paid less than $14 for mine and love them!

Repeat with the darkest color from * to * for a total of 5 rows.
At the end of 5th row change to the silver color as follows: Begin the sl st with the dark color picking up the silver color to complete the sl st. Ch 1.
Cut off the dark color yarn leaving a short tail to weave in at the end.

With the silver yarn, continue in pattern, working the csc’s for a total of 4 rows.
At the end of 4th row change to the white color as follows: Begin the sl st with the silver color picking up the white color to complete the sl st. Ch 1.
Cut off the silver color yarn leaving a short tail to weave in at the end..

With the white yarn, continue in pattern, working the csc’s for a total of 3 rows ending with the sl st and ch 1.

Photo above. Row 4 (white): Work 13 csc, ch 9 to form the handle, sk 8, work 38 csc, ch 9 to form the handle, sk 8, work 25 csc. Ch 1.

Border

NOTE: Photos above. With reverse single crochet (crab stitch), you are working along the row backward rather than forward (see arrow above). Again, it is strongly recommended that you view the YouTube video for this pattern to see how to work this stitch.

Working with reverse single crochet, rsc in ea csc space (not in center of ‘heart’), continue with rsc around handle (as many times as needed to cover chain), continue with rsc around to next handle and repeat to end of row. Sl st in starting ch. Tie off.

I really want to make this basket, but I can’t possibly crochet 3 csc stitches in only 1.25″ with this Lion Brand, Hometown super bulky yarn and an L crochet hook. Should I use a smaller hook or what fo you recommend? I’m not a very experienced crocheter. Will I be ok if I just crochet to the described length and width of the finished basket?

[…] These rectangular crochet baskets are also different from the usual round baskets. You can display it with rolls of toilet paper to show its diversity. View solid grey basket pattern HERE. View multicolor basket HERE. […]

Can I add more rows on the bottom to make it wider without affecting the rest of pattern directions. Couldn’t find that particular yarn and even with another super bulky it’s only 4 inches wide before I start the next step. Thanks for a great pattern!

Hello, I made this basket once before and find I am having same problem as first time. I am a knitter so I still have some trouble with crochet. Does the chain 1 at beginning of the round count as the first stitch? I keep having too many stitches along that beginning side and the end of the short side. Please advise. I have watched the video but find it hard to see Thank you.

Has anyone that has made this, able to answer my question? That Ch 1 keeps throwing my stitch count off plus it looks wonky in one corner because that first Center Single Crochet is like the second stitch. Thanks anyone in advance. The first time I made this I gave up on the cdc and just did single crochet. My corner looked better once I switched.
