Free crochet pattern and video tutorial for this crazy cool boys space wars poncho is below. Of course girls can wear this poncho as well!

This crochet “space wars” poncho was a special request from my grandson and of course I was thrilled to oblige!

Using only single crochet this is an easy crochet pattern for beginners. Learn how to crochet an easy hood!

Materials:

Yarn used:

Red Heart Super Saver

Color Pumpkin 21 ounces

Dusty Grey .5 ounce

Crochet Hook H / 5 mm

Scissors

Yarn needle

FRONT AND BACK PANELS

Ch 68 

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across. 67 sc’s (do not count turning ch). Ch 1. Turn.

Row 2: Sc in 1st sp and ea sp across. 67 sc’s total. Ch 1. Turn

Rows 3 – 76 (81 for BACK panel): Repeat Row 2. Do NOT tie off at end of last row. Continue with neck/shoulder shaping.

NECK/SHOULDER SHAPING (front panel)

Row 1: Sc in 1st sp and next 24 sp’s for 25 sc’s. Ch 1. Turn

Rows 2 – 9: Sc across row for 25 sc’s. At end of last row tie off.

2nd Shoulder:

Row 1: At row 76 of body, skip 17 spaces from the 1st row of beginning of neck shaping; in next sp attach yarn with a chain; sc in same sp. Work 24 more sc’s for 25 sc total. Ch 1. Turn

Rows 2 – 9:  Sc across row for 25 sc’s. At end of last row tie off.

NECK/SHOULDER SHAPING (back panel)

Row 1: Sc in 1st sp and next 24 sp’s for 25 sc’s. Ch 1. Turn

Rows 2 – 4: Sc across row for 25 sc’s. At end of last row tie off.

2nd Shoulder:

Row 1: At row 81 of body, skip 17 spaces from the 1st row of beginning of neck shaping; in next sp attach yarn with a chain; sc in same sp. Work 24 more sc’s for 25 sc total. Ch 1. Turn

Rows 2 – 4:  Sc across row for 25 sc’s. At end of last row tie off.

ATTACH PANELS

With right sides together, wrong side facing you, attach panels at shoulders using a length of yarn and tapestry (or yarn) needle. Use whip stitch. Tie off.    

NOTE: This poncho is left open at the sides.

HOOD

Working right side facing you:

Row 1: At neck (row 76 of front panel), sk 9 sp’s from end of 1st row of neck/shoulder; attach yarn in 10th sp with a ch; sc in same sp. Sc in ea sp around neck, entering only 1 sc in corners. Continue with sc’s to last two sp’s; enter last sc in 2nd to last sp leaving the last sp empty. Ch 1. Turn.

Rows 2 – 35: Sc in 1st sp and ea sp across row. Ch 1. Turn. At last row tie off.

Turn poncho inside out, wrong side facing you. Fold hood at top so 1st st of last row meets last st of last row. Using yarn needle and whip stitch seam the top. Tie off.

SMALL FRONT PATCH

Ch 23

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and ea ch across. 22 sc’s  Ch1. Turn

Rows 2 – 7: sc in 1st sp and ea sp across. Ch 1. Turn 22 sc’s. Tie off at end of last row.

SHOULDER PAD  

Ch 49

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and ea ch across. 48 sc’s  Ch1. Turn

Row 2 – 20: sc in 1st sp and next 9 sp’s. 10 sc’s. Ch 1. Turn. At end of last row tie off.

With wrong side facing you, sk 28 ch’s; attach yarn in next ch with a ch; sc in same sp. Sc across. 10 sc’s. Ch 1. Turn

Repeat rows 2 – 20 above. Do NOT tie off.

At end of last row ch 28. Attach with a slip stitch to the first space of last row of opposite shoulder. Ch 1. Turn

Sc in ea ch. Sl st in 1st sp of opposite shoulder. Tie off.

Attach small patch at center of front panel approximately 4.5 inches from neck using yarn needle and whip stitch. Begin by entering needle from back into front. Seam only top and bottom of patch leaving edges open.

Attach shoulder pads by slipping the shoulder pad over the hood, onto the shoulders. Using yarn needle and whip stitch as for the small patch, seam all around edges of shoulder pad.
