Fringe or Tassels

So many people, not just crocheters, interchange the terms “fringe” and “tassels”. However, they are two very different embellishments, used in different situations.

Generally speaking, you would want to use fringe on crochet wearables rather than tassels. Tassels are (again, generally) thicker and more substantial (even smaller tassels) than fringe and could easily overpower a crochet wearable. Also, they would be extremely uncomfortable on a crochet top. Imagine trying to lean back on a chair and having the ball of the tassel in your back. OUCH!

Fringe on the other hand, is usually thinner, more sparse, than a tassel. Fringe used on crochet wearables often adds a perfect finishing touch and really makes a crochet top much more fun and interesting.

Fringe for Crochet Wearables

Fringe used on crochet wearables can make or break the item. It is crucial to use the correct length and thickness for the particular crochet creation.

A more delicate crochet shawl or crochet poncho, with a very open weave, calls for a thinner sparser use of fringe. You would not want to add the fringe to every “space” as that would make for a thick, full fringe that will easily overpower the delicate weave.

Other crochet tops call for a much longer, denser layer of fringe. This crochet boho festival vest absolutely SCREAMS for lots of super-long fringe. Anything less and you would have a very different outcome.

Be sure to view the video above for many other examples of the proper length, thickness and use of fringe on crochet wearables.

Fringe on Crochet Home Decor

Fringe on crochet home decor? YES! Absolutely! You can use fringe in unexpected, unusual ways such as on baskets and pillow covers.

The crochet basket with fringe above would be just any ole crochet basket if not for the POP of fringe. It adds so much to the end result when used correctly. Note the length and the spacing of the fringe. Done shorter, longer or placed too close together and the effect would be entirely lost. It would overtake the basket.

Adding fringe to a crochet pillow cover, or crochet cushion cover once again adds a perfect pop of interest and sets your crochet pillow apart from the others. The length and placement of the fringe plays a big role here as well.
