Iron crochet? Absolutely! This quick post, crochet tips iron or steam block, will help you see how easy, and SAFE, it is to iron your crochet.

Why Iron Crochet?

I have ironed my crochet pieces many, many times with absolutely no mishaps. In other words, no melting of the yarn! Why would you want to iron crochet anyway?

Have you ever had the corners of a crochet piece flip up and not want to stay flat? Or have you dreaded the idea of blocking dozens of granny squares? It seems that this is a normal way of life for any crocheter.

Ironing is a quick, easy way to solve these crochet headaches.

Blocking or Ironing Crochet?

I’ll be honest…I have never blocked my crochet. The idea of it is exhausting to me. LOL. Firstly, I refuse to spend the big bucks for a “real” blocking board or mat. And the thought of having to use all those little pins to pin down wet (ick) crochet pieces and wait for them to dry…sends me running for the hills. Is it just me?

This might not be your idea of easy, but for me, I can just grab the ironing board, place a towel down (the padding is worn down and flat), place the crochet piece on the towel, put a pillowcase on top of the crochet work (never iron directly on crochet!), and let the steam do all the work. Fast. Please watch the video below to see this in action.

As I type out the process it sounds like just as much work as blocking. Hmmm. But I already have all those items on hand. No need to spend money on special equipment. And no need to wait for the crochet piece to dry.

Steam Block Crochet?

Are you wondering if this is just another name for steam blocking? It is. You use the steam setting of your iron which uses the hot moistness to flatten the crochet item. However, the crochet itself remains dry. You hold the iron an inch or so above the pillowcase so you are not working on the crochet itself.
