This easy crochet poncho for beginners uses lightweight yarn and very basic crochet stitches. It really is crochet beginner friendly! Even the color changes are easy! I promise.
This crochet poncho uses an easy mesh stitch with rows of single crochet in between the mesh stitch rows for added interest. It is worked horizontally and worn vertically. Row 2: Sc in the 1st sp and in ea sp across the row. 106 sc. Ch 3. Turn
Row 3: sk 1st sp;sl st in the next sp; *ch 2; sk the next sp; sl st in the next sp*. Repeat from * to * to last 2 sp’s; ch 2; sl st in last sp. Ch 3. Turn
Row 4 – 6: sl st in the first ch 2 sp; *ch 2; sl st in the next ch 2 sp*. Repeat from * to * to the last ch 2 sp. Ch 2, sl in the last sp. Ch 3, Turn. At end of row 6, ch 1 and turn.

Row 8: Repeat Row 2. 106 sc total.
Rows 9 – 20: Continue the 6 row set for a total of 3 sets of the violet. One set = 4 rows mesh plus 2 rows sc.
NOTE: See sizing instructions at the beginning to work the correct number of sets for your size.
At the end of Row 20 change to the blue yarn as follows:
At the end of the last row begin the last sc for 2 loops on hook. Drop current color and pull the strand of the new color through the loops on hook to complete the sc. Cut off the previous color yarn. Continue in pattern.
Size Small continue in the pattern working the color blocks as follows:
Violet = 20 rows (beginning with 2 sc rows plus 3 sets)
Blue = 24 rows (4 sets)
Teal = 54 rows (9 sets)
Blue = 24 rows (4 sets)
Violet = 18 rows (3 sets)
NOTE: The last violet color block has only 18 rows. We end ea color block on the 2 sc rows. Because we began the panel with 2 rows of sc, this will result in the last color block being shorter than the first color block. You may add 2 more sc rows if you want the same size violet color blocks. However, this is not necessary as the uneven violet blocks are not noticeable.
NOTE 2: See sizing instructions at the beginning to work the correct number of sets for your size.
NOTE 3: For all sizes begin with the 2 rows of sc (Rows 1 and 2).
Cut off yarn at the end of the last row of the panel.
ATTACH PANELS
Position panels wrong sides out (facing you), with color strips running vertically (up and down).
IMPORTANT: Ensure that the panels are situated with the 20 row and 18 row violet color blocks matching; the 20 row sides are touching each other and the 18 row sides are touching each other.
Determine the size of the neck opening. A nine inch opening was used for size small shown here.
Place stitch markers on each end of the neck opening.
Seam shoulders beginning at the panel edge, using a whip stitch, working to the first stitch marker. Tie off. Repeat for the opposite side.
NOTE: change yarn colors to match the color block colors as needed.
NECK BORDER
With right side facing you, insert hook in a shoulder seam to work a sc around the neck, evenly spaced. When you reach the first sc, sl st to join. Cut off yarn.
BOTTOM BORDER
With poncho right side up, attach yarn to the bottom corner. Enter a sc evenly spaced along the bottom. Repeat for the second panel.
NOTE: change yarn color as needed to match the color blocks.
Weave in tails as needed.
