Crochet Tote Bag

This crochet tote bag uses only single crochet stitches to keep the weave nicely closed. You don’t want the bag contents to pop out of any holes.

We also use the reverse single crochet (RSC) also known as the crab stitch, to give it a cool border. The reverse single crochet is simply single crochets worked to the right of the row rather than working to the left of the row. Easy!

The reverse single crochet is also the magic that keeps the handle from stretching out of shape! How cool is that? A crochet handle that does not stretch!

You can carry this crochet bag full of goodies and not worry about it dragging on the floor because the handles stretched and pulled everything way down. So annoying right?

This crochet bag has a generous flat bottom that allows the bag to stand when you put it down. It also allows for more room for whatever you choose to put inside.

The bottom is made of a simple rectangle to keep it easy! No need to create a curved oblong.

It’s an easy stitch once you learn it, but watching it in action is helpful. Please click the YouTube button on the bottom of the video below to watch it on the YouTube platform. That allows you to leave a thumbs up and comment.

Continue working sc’s in remaining st’s until you reach the handle. Do NOT ch.

NOTE: RSC = insert hook in the previous st of the same row. You are working regular sc’s going in reverse; rather than working sc’s to the left of the row, you are working sc’s to the right of the row (in reverse).

Please view VIDEO TUTORIL above on YouTube.

Work a RSC in ea st until you reach the first handle.

Work 30 RSC around the handle. You are working around the sc’s of the handle (not into the sc’s…around the sc’s).

You will need to push the sc’s to the left to make room for the full 30 sc’s. You may work fewer than 30 if you prefer.

Continue working the RSC’s in the remaining st’s until you reach the next handle. Work RSC’s around the handle.

Continue working RSC’s to the beginning of the row.

Sl st to join.  Cut yarn. Weave in tail.

TASSEL (optional)

Use an object the length of the tassel. I used a 9 inch book. Wind yarn around the object to your preferred thickness.

Take a 9 inch length of yarn (one strand) and bring it under the strands; slide it to the top of the object. Tie tightly at the center. Double or triple knot.

Cut strands at the bottom.

Pull tassel off the object.

Take another 9 inch length of yarn (one strand); place on table. Place tassel on top of strand about 1.5 inches from top of tassel. Tie tightly. Double or triple knot.

Take a matching or contrasting color scrap yarn and wind around the top of the tassel to form a band. Tie off.

Attach tassel to the top of the tote bag.
