Size Medium

This pattern requires no multiple.

Instructions are for Medium.

Small / Large ; X Large / 1X / 2X  are in parentheses (X).

Results will vary according to yarn and tension used. Sizing should be considered “suggestions”. Adjust as needed.

Dimensions Size Medium: Width = 21 inches; length = 19 inches

Abbreviations

BLO = Back loop only

Ch = chain 

Ea – each

ESC = extended single crochet

Rpt = repeat

Sc = single crochet 

Sk = skip 

Sp = space 

St = stitch 

YO = yarn over

Materials size Medium

I used yarn I had on hand (body = #3 ; granny squares = #4). You may use #3 yarn for sleeves.

Crochet Hook G /4.25 mm

Yarn needle 

Scissors

Stitch markers (2) or contrasting strand of yarn

Extended Single Crochet (ESC): Begin as for a single crochet with 2 loops on hook; yo, pull through 1st loop on hook; yo, pull through 2 loops on hook.

MAIN PANEL (make 2) 

Ch 71 (61, 91, 111, 131)  with blue yarn

Row 1: With main color, Sc in BLO in 2nd ch from hook and ea ch across. 70 (60, 90, 110, 130) sc’s. Ch 1. Turn

Row 2 – 59 (59, 73, 87, 101): ESC in 1st sp and ea sp across the row. 70 (60, 90, 110, 130) esc’s. Ch 1. Turn

Tie off yarn at end of last row.

NOTE: You may adjust length by adding or subtracting rows.

GRANNY SQUARE

Size Small make 6 (3 per sleeve)

Size Medium make 8 for wide sleeves (4 per sleeve); make 6 (3 per sleeve) for slimmer sleeves

Size Large/XL make 8 (4 per sleeve)

Size 1X/2X make 9 (5 per sleeve)

NOTE: If preferred, you may use a different color yarn for ea row. Tie off yarn after ea row and attach next color for ea subsequent row.

With multi color yarn chain 3. Sl st into the 1st ch to form a ring. Ch 3 (this counts as 1st dc of the first granny cluster).

Row 1: Into the center ring, work 2 dc. This forms the first cluster. Ch 2; work 3 dc in ring, ch 2; work 3 dc in ring, ch 2; work 3 dc in ring; ch 2. You will have created 4 clusters to form 4 corners. Sl st into beginning ch 3. 

Row 2: Ch 3 (this counts as 1st dc of cluster). Work 2 dc in sp to the right of the beginning ch 3. *3 dc in the next ch 2 sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp*. Rpt from * to * into ea of the next 2 ch 2 sp’s. You are creating corners into the previous row’s corners. Work 3 dc’s into the 1st sp, ch 2. Sl st into the top of 1st ch 3. This completes the first cluster of this row.

Row 3: Ch 3 (this counts as 1st dc of cluster). Work 2 dc in sp to the right of the beginning ch 3; *work 3 dc’s into the next sp; 3 dc in the next ch 2 sp, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp*. Rpt from * to * until you reach the first corner. Complete that corner with 3 dc, ch 2. Sl st into top of beginning ch 3.

Row 4: Repeat Row 3 working a dc cluster into ea sp between the clusters, between the corners. Tie off yarn.

Row 5: Attach main color. Repeat Row 4.

If needed or as preferred, you may block your squares.

ATTACH GRANNY SQUARES

Place two granny squares side by side. With yarn needle and length of yarn, enter needle from bottom of square into the center ch of the corner, from the bottom, enter the needle into the center ch of the 2nd square corner.

NOTE: You will be working into the single strand, the outside strand of the chain that has formed in the last row of the granny square.

how to attach granny squares

Enter the needle into the single strand of the 1st square’s ch; then enter the needle into the single strand of the 2nd square’s ch. Repeat into ea ch until you reach the center ch of the corners. Tie off yarn leaving a tail to weave in.

Attach as many squares as needed for your size.

SHOULDER SEAM 

With wrong sides facing you, place front and back panels together.  Determine neck opening width. Suggest 8 – 9 inches. Attach stitch markers at ends of neck opening. Beginning at the edge and working toward the stitch marker, with a yarn needle, length of yarn and whip stitch, seam shoulders. Cut off yarn. 

SIDE SEAMS

With wrong side facing you, open panels. Position strip of granny squares, wrong side up, centered with the shoulder seam. Use whip stitch to seam granny square sleeve to body. Repeat for opposite side. 

NECK BORDER  

With right side facing you, attach yarn at shoulder seam with a ch. Sc in ea sp evenly around the neck. At end of row sl st into beginning st. Tie off yarn.
